An AI companion is software designed for ongoing conversation. Instead of returning only a list of search results or completing a single task, it gives you a conversational place to explore thoughts, revisit a topic or work through what you want to say.

The word companion describes the experience the product aims to offer. It does not mean the software is a person, understands you as a person would, or has a professional duty of care. That distinction is useful when deciding what to share and how much weight to give a reply.

What a conversation can look like

You might start with something ordinary: “I have three things on my mind and cannot decide where to begin.” A conversational tool can help turn that into a list, ask which part you want to discuss, or help you draft a message.

Another starting point is a conversation you have not had yet: “Help me explain that I need more notice before a deadline changes.” The useful result is a draft you can assess and adapt. You remain responsible for whether it fits your situation.

These are examples of uses, not promises about how every companion behaves. Products differ in their design, features and limits.

How it differs from search and a general assistant

Search is useful when you want to find information and inspect its sources. A general AI assistant may focus on completing tasks such as summarizing a file or drafting a plan. A companion typically puts continuing conversation at the center.

The categories overlap. Calling a product a companion does not prove that its information is more accurate, that it remembers everything, or that it provides therapy. Judge the actual features and policies rather than the label alone.

Conversation is not verification

A fluent response can still be mistaken. The World Health Organization has warned that language-model responses can sound authoritative while being incorrect, particularly in health contexts. Read WHO’s explanation.

Treat a suggestion as something to examine. If a reply makes a factual claim, ask what supports it and check a reliable source yourself. Do not use a companion to make medical, legal or financial decisions for you.

It also has only the context available to it. If it guesses another person’s motive or fills in a missing detail, you can say: “That is an assumption. Please separate what I told you from what you inferred.”

What to check before choosing one

  • Purpose: Is the product clear about what it is designed to do?
  • Memory: What can it save, and can you review or remove that context?
  • Data handling: What happens on your device, and what requires online processing?
  • Access: Which features are available on the free plan, and what requires payment?
  • Boundaries: Does it explain its limits without claiming to replace human relationships or professional care?

You do not need to start with highly personal details. A general description can be enough to see whether the conversation style is useful to you.

Where MAX fits

MAX AI Companion is a text-first product intended for adults aged 18 and older. You can use it for everyday conversation and personal reflection. Saved context you choose to keep can carry into later check-ins, and you can review and manage that memory. Explore MAX’s current features.

Before sharing, read the current privacy explanation. MAX is a companion, not a therapist or an emergency service; its safety page explains that boundary.

A useful first message can be small: “I want to organize one thought. Ask me one question at a time.” Then decide whether the exchange helps you express what you meant.
